Until not long ago body piercing was considered a symbol of bad habits that is not conform to moral and social expectations, but today it seems that it has become a trend, especially for teens. In navel, tongue, eyebrow or other areas, body piercing causes parents ‘disapproval’.

What is body piercing ?

Body piercing is a practice found from the most ancient times and was often mentioned in art tractates, as a way of body embellishment. Every culture and race since thousands of years ago, has a different way to understand and apply body piercing. Like many other human habits, the perception of beauty concept varies from person to person. As such, there are many tribes, whose superlative of this feature involves the introduction of some discs with a piercing shape in various body parts. Common in recent years is ear piercing, borrowed from Orelhas Pau, a tribe that has its origins in the Amazon. There is even a Bible consignment of body piercing, in Genesis 24:22.

How much does it cost ?

  • For ear cartilage, earlobes or cheek: expect average costs of $20 to $55.
  • For the nose, eyebrow, navel or nipple: expect average costs of $30 to $65.
  • For a medusa – a piercing above the lip, the tongue web; the surface of the body, like the nape of the neck: expect average costs of $40 to $85 or even more.

Usually the costs cover the body jewelry, unless you want a jewelry upgrade.

How is the body pierced ?

Body piercing is not as easy as shopping, but it is not always too hard. The process itself is quick and appealingly simple, but it should not be implemented without a good anatomy and sterilization process knowledge, and also a knowledge on the materials to be used and methods of wound healing.

It is important to first sterilize the piercing jewelry and the working materials. The skin is disinfected and numbed with a local anesthetic. After that, the place is marked and punctured with a needle. Jewel is threaded through a needle and pulled through the resulting hole. This process can be repeated, so it will cause slight bleeding.

Bleeding should stop after a short period of time followed by wound wiping and cleaning.

When will the body piercing be fully healed ?

Very important in this matter is the post-tattooing treatment! Healing time is particular to each body and each person and it will depend on several factors.ear pierding

An earlobe piercing heals usually in 4 weeks and all the other ear parts heal in about 2-3 months because cartilage does not store a lot of blood. Eyebrow piercing heals after about 6-12 weeks. Nose piercing healing depends on the exact location, because the outside takes about 2 months, and septum piercing can take even 3 to 4 months. Tongue piercing healing goes a little faster, it needs around 2 weeks. Although the exact lip location does matter, a lower lip piercing lasts six weeks and one in the middle can last 4 to 6 weeks. The nipple and navel need 2 to 6 months to heal.

But, as I said, these are just general dates and can vary from one person to another!

What should you do after piercing ?

  • Wash your hands before any contact with the piercing.
  • No need to rotate the jewelry, except for the moment when you apply the treatment.
  • Leave the jewelry in its original shape until total healing. Check twice a day, with your hands clean, if the balls are well screwed.

What should you avoid ?

  • Do not use alcohol, oxygenated water, Betadine, because it dries the skin hindering the healing.
  • Do not apply unguents containing Bacitracin, Neosporin or antibiotic unguent, because it blocks the wound oxygenation and form a sticky residue which can cause complications, that are not in the benefit of the piercing healing.
  • Do not wash excessively, do not use too many products, choose just one.
  • Avoid oral contact, bumps and contact with other person’s fluids.
  • Do not use bandages and plaster because it stops the oxygenation and causes irritation.
  • Avoid sleeping on the piercing during healing.
  • Avoid swimming in pools, lakes, etc. if you are not sure that the water is clean enough, especially for a piercing in the healing period.
